First Shift’s Cortado Is Correct. The Biscuit Is Better.
Four ounces at the right ratio, and a ham biscuit baked on site that would carry the trip on its own; the room is loud by 9 a.m.

Our Visit
I arrived at First Shift Coffee just after the morning rush started. The cortado came out fast in a Gibraltar glass with perfect latte art, the espresso and milk in the right four ounce ratio. It was balanced, not too bitter or milky, exactly what a cortado should be. The ham biscuit was even better. Baked on site that morning, the biscuit was tall and flaky with a good chew. The ham was thick cut and salty in the right way. Together they made a breakfast that would carry the trip on its own.
The room is a bright corner space with high ceilings and lots of windows. By 9 a.m. it gets loud from the espresso machine and conversation. There are only four outlets and they fill up fast. Most people stand at the high tables or take their order to go. The service is quick and friendly even when the line forms.
Score: 7.8. Score: 7.8.
